On this special day, I will take you on a scientific journey exploring how viruses have driven the evolution of remarkable immune systems in bacteria and archaea. The journey encompasses the discovery and unravelling of CRISPR-Cas, which is now widely used as a versatile tool in research, biotechnology, and medicine. Additionally, I will highlight the potential use of viruses themselves to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Last but not least I will highlight all the people who have contributed to this remarkable scientific journey.

My lab is interested in the interaction between microbes and bacteriophages. We study the mechanisms that bacteria use to protect themselves from infections including CRISPR and other phage defense systems, and we explore the adaptations that viruses have evolved to avoid defence systems. We isolate and engineer bacteriophages for phage therapy applications.
